12:34 p.m. - 2004-04-09 1. What do you do for a living? I make video games. More specifically, I am an Assistant Producer for a large video game company that I refer to in my diary as SimParentCompany. Technically, I work for a subsidiary of this parent company that I call SimCompany. 2. What do you like most about your job? The fact that I have a significant impact on our game's success through design and management, and that hundreds of thousands of people will enjoy our work. I also love that I'm working on a series known for its universal appeal, and I'm trying to make sure that we retain that appeal to both women and men as much as possible. Every little thing can make a difference. The other people I work with are generally totally awesome, and they keep my coming back even when the work sucks. Intelligent, passionate, and unique. We're all part of this new medium in its relative infancy (like films in the early 1900's) and it's great watching how the industry evolves. There's also just more of a tolerance for self-expression around here. Even in a corporate environment, the office is much livelier. We also get great perks...yes, lots of free video games. :) 3. What do you like least about your job? Occasional tedium and one too many phone calls. Since the move, I also dislike the corporate feel of the new offices (now that we've moved to SimParentCompany's headquarters.) Before, things were a lot more laid back. Also, the pay for producers is well below what I would be making had I taken a programming job, but I'm happier doing this, and that's more important than an excess of money. 4. When you have a bad day at work it's usually because _____... Lately? It's usually because of the UnnamedIndustryRatingsBoard. Also, working on an N*G@ge title totally sucked. Read prior entries (in february/march) if you want to see examples of me pulling my hair out. 5. What other career(s) are you interested in? Anything in the theme park industry, but most specifically working for Disney World/Imagineering again, because that was awesome. Not that I'm not happy here - I'm enjoying this a good deal, I love the product I work on, and I'm being given mad opportunities and responsibility for someone with my experience. But I've always been a Disney geek, and so I may just find my way back there one day.
